Inspired by Sally Wainwright’s series Gentleman Jack, which was based on
the diaries of Anne Lister. The song takes as its subject Lister’s partner, Ann
Walker, about whose life we know much less. Her shy, vulnerable nature
means that her courage in defying the social norms of her day feels in some
ways even greater than Anne Lister’s. In the end she had to deal with the
event of Lister’s tragic death whilst they adventured together in Georgia en
route to Persia.
