NextGEMS Cycle 3 simulation with ICON R2B9: salinity and velocity at the ocean surface at 5 km res.

Описание к видео NextGEMS Cycle 3 simulation with ICON R2B9: salinity and velocity at the ocean surface at 5 km res.

Visualization of salinity and velocity magnitude at the ocean's surface of a simulation with a coupled global setup of ICON/ICON-O at a horizontal resolution of ~5 km. The salinity is encoded by color, while the velocity magnitude can be depicted by height mapping of the flow field (ParaView: Extrusion Surface). Saline water is shaded in red colors, while fresh water masses are colored blue. Sources of relatively fresh water are e.g. the rivers, while areas with strong evaporation are mostly visible by reddish colors.

The simulation was carried out on DKRZ's supercomputer Levante. The visualization covers more than 5 simulated years and is based on daily data. One the one hand, the visualization shows slowly moving ocean currents, on the other hand, quickly moving weather patterns such as storms are also reflected in the salinity (low values due to strong rain) and the surface ocean velocity.

Simulation: MPI-M / DKRZ
Visualization: Michael Böttinger, DKRZ
