State Departments of Education requires schools to test their children to both monitor the progress of their students and to hold school accountable for educating their students. These state- and district-wide assessments have an important role but are often not appropriate for students with disabilities. Sometimes they’re appropriate, but the student may need accommodations like a scribe, modified environment, or modified materials in order to test appropriately. In either case, IEP teams must state what accommodations are necessary and why a) the child cannot participate in the standardized assessment and b) what kind of assessment the district will use to monitor the child’s progress. Such assessments can be based on modified achievement standards or standards that are all together alternate.
