Dubbed the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program, it offers up to $5,000 in incentives for Battery Electric and hydrogen vehicles, and up to $2,500 for plug-in hybrids. But this time, buyers can only claim one rebate over the five-year life of the program.

One of the biggest changes is the cap on vehicle cost. Now, it applies only to vehicles with a final transaction price below $50,000—fees and options included. That means models like the Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive, currently priced at $49,990 in Canada, might miss out after fees are added—unless Tesla makes some changes to squeeze under the cap.

There are also new rules about where the car is built. Only EVs made in Canada or imported from countries with a free trade agreement, like Germany, will qualify. That means Chinese-made vehicles are out, but Germany-built ones like the Berlin-made Tesla Model Y could be eligible.

The program runs until 2031, but rebate amounts will decline yearly, starting in 2027. So the sooner you buy, the more you’ll save.
