A slow and atmospheric wander through Polperro, one of Cornwall’s most iconic fishing villages, where narrow lanes tumble down to a tiny tidal harbour and every crooked roof tells a story. Enclosed by steep cliffs and guarded by the sea, Polperro feels like a living time capsule—part working port, part seaside dream. The scent of salt and seaweed mixes with chimney smoke, gulls cry overhead, and the tide slaps softly against the old stone walls.

Polperro’s charm lies not just in its postcard-perfect looks but in its layered history. Once a thriving centre for pilchard fishing and smuggling, it was said that every second cottage had a secret passage or trapdoor to hide contraband from the excise men. The narrow streets—barely wide enough for a cart—still twist between whitewashed cottages with slate roofs, many of them built by fishermen themselves centuries ago.

At the harbour, small boats rise and fall with the tide, their reflections rippling against sea-slicked stone. The Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing captures tales of daring runs and shipwrecks, where fortunes were made under moonlight. Look for the old net lofts, still standing as silent witnesses to generations of sea labour.

Beyond the harbour, clifftop paths offer views that make time stop—jagged rocks, foaming surf, and the South West Coast Path stretching away in both directions.
