Taiwan Suffers Overnight Earthquakes as Aftershocks Rattle Island

Taiwan was shaken by a series of earthquakes overnight with more than 80 quakes rattling the island in less than 24 hours. Authorities said the strongest quake to hit had a magnitude of 6.3. It caused two buildings to partially collapse and kept residents up in fear through the night. The quakes were centred on the largely rural eastern county of Hualien. Some residents have been evacuated and schools and offices in Hualien County were ordered to close. Authorities said that the tremors were aftershocks from the deadly April 3 quake, which was the strongest to hit Taiwan in 25 years.
