Veteran Wayanad farmer, Alanchery Balakrishnan, now has a patent for a new variety of turmeric developed by him.

The patent has been granted by the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority under the Government of India.

The now patented variety of turmeric, called 916, was born out of a happy accident.

After Balakrishnan identified the unique turmeric plant that produced a higher yield and exhibited a vibrant golden hue, he presented it to the Agriculture Department for further experimentation.

Balakrishnan's contributions to agriculture have earned him numerous accolades, including the Farmer Scientist Award in 2008 and the National Agricultural Award in 2009.

More recently, in 2023, he was honored by the State Biodiversity Board for his exceptional efforts in plant conservation.
