Responding with "website is temporarily down for maintenance" message using Apache .htaccess file.
In this project we have 3 files: index.html, maintenance.html and .htaccess file. index.html file contents is the following. Just an ordinary HTML page, nothing special here. If we access this page, we are going to see the "main page" header, which is centrally aligned on the page. maintenance.html contents is similar, except that it outputs a different message: "Website is temporarily down for maintenance!".
Let's first start with no rules applied in the .htaccess file. When we try to access our website we get the index.html page. But if we add the following lines to the .htaccess file and try to access the same URL / web address, we get the maintenance.html page instead.
The dot here matches any single character, except line break characters to be precise. So when just a single character of the request is matched, the maintenance.html file will be provided by the server. No matter what page we try to access whether it is an index page or the contact page or any other page.
