On Friday, December 20, 2024, a multi-agency task force conducted a scheduled cleanup operation at the Venice Beach restrooms, addressing ongoing safety and sanitation issues at one of Los Angeles' most frequented public spaces.

The coordinated effort brought together the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), Los Angeles Park Rangers, the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, and Los Angeles County Beaches and Harbors.

During the operation, Los Angeles Park Rangers requested a homeless individual to remove belongings from the restroom facilities, in accordance with Los Angeles Municipal Code 63.44.b. The individual complied without incident, allowing the cleanup to proceed efficiently.

The Venice Beach restrooms, often used as shelter by unhoused individuals, were a primary focus of the operation. Sanitation crews, equipped with protective gear, meticulously removed hazardous and non-hazardous waste under strict safety protocols. Security was maintained by LAPD officers and Park Rangers, ensuring the safety of workers and the public throughout the cleanup.

Although Municipal Code 63.44 prohibits camping in public parks, enforcement during this operation emphasized compliance over penalties. Individuals camping nearby were asked to vacate temporarily, reflecting a compassionate approach by authorities.

The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) was present to provide food, water, and hygiene kits to individuals impacted by the cleanup. A representative from Councilwoman Traci Park’s office attended, underscoring the city’s commitment to balancing public health and safety with assistance for its homeless population.

This cleanup initiative highlights Los Angeles' broader challenges in addressing homelessness while maintaining sanitation and safety in public spaces. City officials aim to continue balancing enforcement of municipal codes with empathetic outreach and support for those in need.
