But another voice, louder and angrier, drowns it out. They give you the chair but not the title. The position but not the respect. They'll let you sit among Masters while reminding you that you're not one of them.
He thinks of his mother, dying in his arms while he was too late to save her. He thinks of the Tusken camp afterward, and the darkness he embraced. He thinks of Padmé, carrying their children in secret because the Jedi's rules matter more than human connection. He thinks of every battle where he was sent to die for their ideals but never trusted enough to question them.
The nightmares have been getting worse. Padmé dying in childbirth, screaming his name while he stands frozen. The restricted archives might hold answers—ancient knowledge about preventing death—but only Masters have access. And despite everything he's accomplished, despite the Chancellor himself recognizing his worth, the Council still denies him.
Windu gestures toward the empty seat with impatience.
Windu (stern): "Take your seat, young Skywalker."
Young Skywalker. Not "Master." Not even just "Skywalker." Young.
Anakin stares at the chair. It should represent everything he's worked for since he was nine years old. Instead, it feels like a cage. Something in him breaks—or perhaps something finally stops breaking and hardens instead.
He doesn't move.
Windu (eyes narrowing): "Did you not hear me?"
Anakin (quiet, dangerous): "I heard you, Master Windu. But I will not take that seat."
The chamber goes utterly still. Several Council members lean forward, shocked.
Ki-Adi-Mundi (disbelief): "You refuse your appointment to the Jedi Council?"
Part of Anakin—the part that remembers being a nine-year-old boy who dreamed of becoming a Jedi Master—screams at him to back down, to apologize, to sit in that chair and accept whatever scraps of recognition they're willing to offer.
But he's tired. Tired of being underestimated. Tired of being used. Tired of fighting a war where he makes impossible decisions every day while the Council treats him like a child.
Anakin (voice steady but edged with anger): "The Chancellor appoints me to this Council—the highest honor in the Jedi Order. And you accept his appointment, but then you deny me the rank that should come with it. You give me a seat but refuse me the respect. You want me here, but not as your equal."
Windu (defensive, stern): "The rank of Master is not simply granted because of an appointment, Skywalker. It must be earned through wisdom, discipline, and adherence to the Jedi Code—"
Anakin (interrupting, voice rising): "Earned? What more do I have to do? I've fought in more battles than half this Council combined! I've saved Master Kenobi's life, I've defeated Dooku, I've won victories on Jabiim, Praesitlyn, Nelvaan—planets where you sent me because I was the only one who could succeed!"
Shaak Ti (gently): "Your accomplishments in war are not in question, Anakin. But the rank of Master requires more than martial skill. It requires emotional maturity, self-control—"
Anakin (bitter): "Self-control? I've shown nothing but control! I've followed every order, fought every battle, made every sacrifice you've asked of me! I've watched friends die, I've made decisions that haunt me every night—"
He cuts himself off, breathing hard. He almost said too much.
Obi-Wan (quiet, concerned): "Anakin, your passion has always been your greatest strength. But it is also your greatest weakness. The Council sees this conflict within you—"
Anakin (turning on his former master): "The Council sees what it wants to see! You've all decided I'm too emotional, too unpredictable, too dangerous—and nothing I do will ever change that, will it?"
Plo Koon (carefully): "Anakin, no one questions your dedication or your abilities. But the rank of Master is about more than power. It represents trust
