Physics is the subject that explains the phenomena in the world, and this experiment with wine and water illustrates a basic principle of physics: density.

First, two identical glasses are shown, one filled with red wine and the other with water. The person performing the experiment places a thin, flexible card or piece of plastic on top of the glass of wine. Then, they carefully invert the glass of water and place it on top of the card and the wine glass, effectively stacking the water glass on top of the wine glass.

The key moment occurs when the card is slowly and carefully slid out from between the two glasses. Since wine is less dense than water, the two liquids do not mix immediately. The less-dense wine remains in the bottom glass, and the more-dense water stays in the top glass. The boundary between the two liquids is visible and well-defined, with only a small amount of mixing occurring at the interface.
