(25 Nov 1957) Seventeen Ayrshire miners lost their lives in the disaster at Kames Colliery. All were men of Muirkirk. Eleven others were injured by the pit explosion. The rescue operations involved a two-mile journey along damaged galleries, deep down in the mine.
