“Need to protect people from pollution”, is the primary reason Nitin Gadkari gave for his almost evangelical fervour for a shift towards green fuels. Speaking at the annual summit of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the union road transport and highways minister said the auto industry needed to adopt new technologies which were environment-friendly and had to convert knowledge into wealth. Citing the example of the diesel car market drastically shrinking in the past few years, Gadkari emphasised that he had nothing against traditional petrol and diesel fuel-powered cars but had to consider those who were being impacted by air pollution. He promised the auto ecosystem four things – proven technologies, economic viability, availability of raw materials and a market for the finished product.
