Violin Peg placement

00:05 - A correct placement must allow the strings to reach the peg from the nut in a straight line without touching the pegs of the other strings, a fundamental requirement to ensure easy, stable and precise tuning. Although aesthetically it may seem inappropriate, the centers of the holes will not be on the midline of the pegbox but slightly offset, so that they can best fulfill their function. The measurements of the spacings are not rigorous and can be varied to adapt to any different geometries of the pegbox, although it is preferable not to deviate too much from those indicated.
00:45 - 1- Draw the line of the nut at 90° with the plane of the neck
00:53 - 2- Start by placing the G peg 16mm from the nut line
01:03 - 3- Or 21.5 mm from the base of the nut
01:12 - 4- Make sure that the center of the G peg is positioned just above the midline of the pegbox
01:24 - 5- With the compass draw an arc centered on the G peg and tangent to the volute
01:35 - 6- Place the center for the A peg 1 mm above the midline of the pegbox
01:47 - 7- The distance between the centers of G and A pegs must be between a minimum of 50 mm and a maximum of 52 mm
01:58 - 8- With the compass draw an arc centered on the G peg with a radius of 15 mm
02:08 - 9- Place the center for the E peg 1 mm below the midline of the pegbox
02:21 - 10- Connect the centers of E and A pegs with a straight line
02:30 - 11- With the compass draw an arc centered on the A peg with a radius of 15 mm
02:40 - 12- Place the center for the D peg on the straight line, or just below it
02:53 - 13- Position of the centers of the pegs with respect to the midline of the pegbox
03:07 - 14- Measures
03:17 - 15- The purpose of this placement is to ensure that the D and A strings arrive from the nut to their respective pegs in a straight line without touching the other pegs, a fundamental requirement to ensure easy and precise tuning
