Welcome back to another episode of Winemaker Wednesday! This week, we're delving into the world of Chardonnay, a versatile and beloved wine that continues to captivate wine lovers around the globe.

Did you know that the name Chardonnay originates from a small town in the French Burgundy region? This noble grape variety thrives in cooler climates, making it a favorite in regions such as Sonoma County, Monterey County, and Santa Barbara County in California, as well as Oregon’s Willamette Valley, New Zealand, France (Burgundy, Chablis, and Champagne), New York, Washington, Australia, Italy, and South Africa.

Chardonnay is often referred to as "The Winemaker's Grape" due to its incredible versatility. Whether you prefer your wine sweet or dry, light or heavy-bodied, or with low or high alcohol content (typically 12-15%), Chardonnay has a style for everyone. Its aromas and flavors can range from apples, pears, and citrus to melons, clove, vanilla, and toast. On the palate, it can be mineral and flinty, crisp and acidic, or rich, oily, creamy, buttery, and oaky.

We’ll also cover how to serve Chardonnay to enhance its flavors. It pairs wonderfully with mild cheeses like triple cream and jack, white fish, chicken in creamy sauces, and pasta with brown butter sauce and zucchini. Serve it at a temperature of 55-65°F in a Burgundy glass with a narrow opening and a large wide bowl to fully appreciate its complex aromas.

Finally, we’ll discuss the quality and style of Chardonnay at different price points, from an affordable $12 bottle to a premium $35 offering from Lost Sierra Wine Co.
