The Bätz organ
Two instruments preceded the current organ. The first organ functioned in the period before the Reformation until 1592. In that year probably, the organbuilder Pieter Janszoon de Swart from Utrecht built a new organ that functioned until 1822. In the same period, the churchwardens decided to have a new instrument built by the organbuilder Jonathan Bätz, also from Utrecht. This organ was inaugurated on 12 October 1823. "In the afternoon, Messrs Broerse and Brachthuizen let the power and melodiousness of the instrument be heard for a decent crowd, which had flocked to hear it. This they did by the performence of an ouverture, chorale variations on hymn no. 40, "De Morgenstond", a flute concerto, a fanfare, sleighride and finale." Externally the instrument displays the characteristics of new styles, internally it remains classical. Apparently the musical requirements of the time were such, that an independent pedal was not regarded as being necessary. The organ has seen minor alterations. Most of the pipework survived the later interventions of organbuilders like Ch. G. F. Witte and J. C. Sanders. Following the restoration of the church, the organ was restored by S.F. Blank in 1978. It has 23 stops on the manuals; the pedal is always coupled to the great and has no stops of it own. Christine Kamp has been organist of Grote Kerk te Weesp since 1996.
