More than 1,400 people were on hand to witness the 2009 Art Institute of Seattle fashion show on March 12, 2009. Peace, Love, & Fashion played 2 sold-out shows to area high-school students, Art Institute faculty, students and guests, and members of the Seattle area fashion community. The Showbox SODO was standing-room only as, once again, The Art Institute of Seattle presented a stunning showcase of the bright future of fashion design and marketing in the Northwest.
Executive Producer Joan Kelly (faculty, The Art Institute of Seattle) hosted the event, which included local celebrity models Darnell Sue (Girl About Town/The Seattle PI), Art Institute Dean of Education Scott Carnz, and Cherry Street Coffee House owner Ali Ghambari. More than 85 different designs were on display in the show, and more than 22 different designers contributed work to Peace, Love, & Fashion - making it one of the biggest shows in the 11 year history of the event.
Peace, Love, & Fashion was produced in association with the Event Production class at The Art Institute of Seattle, and instructor Lisa Anderson. Students were involved in every level of the production, from marketing and promotion, to VIP services and media relations. The Art Institute of Seattle is proud of our contribution to the future of fashion, said Joan Kelly, and to helping young designers and producers develop the tools they need to grow as artists and professionals.
Designers Michelle Lateste, Eunice Poon, and Irene Lim were featured in an online VIDEO from The Seattle Times, and joined Justin Bartle, Jessica Russell, Angelia Sasmita, and Chloe White as the featured designers for this years event. An exciting element of this years show was the guest appearance by Art Institute of Seattle alumnus and Project Runway Season 5 star Blayne Walsh. Blayne was a judge for the show, and graciously spent more than an hour at the sponsor photo-backdrop, having his picture taken with the huge number of fans who had lined up for a chance to meet the Hall-of-Fame graduate and TV star.
Blayne was joined at the judging table by Ali Bayse, Editor of Seattle Bride Magazine, Gisela Manning, owner of Ragamoffyns Boutique, Andrew Burkhardt of the Seattle Models Guild, Justin McKibben, owner of Kibbn Childrens Store, Laura Cassidy of Seattle Metropolitan Magazine, and James Zochodni, Editor of D-List Magazine.
The judges had their hands full, faced with an eclectic array of individual designs to evaluate. Garments were critiqued during the matinee show, and results announced after the main show. The award for Most Creative Ensemble went to Lindsey Hayes - the Next Project Runway Star award went to Michelle Lateste, as did the award for Best Couture Garment. The judges awarded the Best High-Fashion Garment prize to Katie Moran, while the award for the Most Marketable Contemporary Wear went to Colt Putnam for his yellow snowboarding suit.
Peace, Love, & Fashion was sponsored in part by Adobe, Shiseido Cosmetics, Seven Salon, A&A Printing, and D-List Magazine, and joined by more than 35 community partners like Vain, Strut Boutique, The Gap, Clutch, Mu Shoe, Urban Outfitters, and many more.
