Cyclone Warnings are in effect for parts of Western Australia today as a new cyclone takes shape just offshore. The storm is expected to intensify a little and make landfall as a moderate tropical storm (Category 1-2 AU scale) to the east of Cockatoo Island and Derby.

The storm is likely to drop up to 200mm of rainfall over a fairly wide area at landfall and inland later on, whilst unrelated rains continue to affect large parts of the interior of Queensland to the east.

Elsewhere, Cyclone Courtney is near its peak out over the open Indian Ocean, with winds near 100mph (160kph) sustained. The storm is expected to hold near its intensity and start weakening this weekend as it turns towards the south and enters less favourable conditions. Wind shear is already proving to be an issue for this storm.

No other tropical activity is expected in the next seven days.
