Gustav Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony was first premiered in 1895 with great acclaim. Here in the first movement, dramatic and stormy tension often collide back and forth with softer and lyrical elements in this movement, aiming to creating a sense of internal strife and discernment with the listener. Originally, Mahler conceived this movement as a musical tone poem about the internal strife with death, and the labeled the movement as "Todtenfeier", which means "Funeral Rites". He later incorporated it as an integral part to his great 2nd Symphony concerning death and resurrection, "Die I will, so that I might live!".
