even though, and yet, in spite of the fact that

Verb plain + くせに/くせして
Noun + のくせに/くせして
なadjective + なくせに/くせして
いadjective + くせに/くせして

Cannot be used if the subject is different
「~のに」 expresses feelings of disappointment, but using 「くせに/くせして」can emphasize feelings of criticism, dissatisfaction, and contempt.

彼はお金持ちのくせにケチだ
彼はお金持ちなのにケチだ
He is stingy despite being rich

彼は日本人のくせに漢字が読めない。
彼は日本人なのに漢字が読めない。
Even though he’s Japanese, he can’t read kanji.

1. Used when insulting or blaming the other party.
彼は歌が下手なくせに歌手になりたがっている。
Despite being bad at singing, he wants to be a singer.

彼はできないくせに、いつも「私にその仕事をさせてください」と言う。
He always says, "Let me do the job," even though he can't.

彼女は運転ができないくせして、いつも私の運転に文句を言ってくる。
She always complains about my driving, even though she can't drive.

2. Used in casual conversation at the end of the sentence.

「電話する」って言ったくせに(電話しなかった)!
You told me that you were going to call me! (but you didn't call me)

「医者でもないくせに(私の病気について何も言うな)!」
You are not even a doctor! (don’t say something about my disease)


3. Used when making fun of the other party
「彼女はすぐにやきもちを焼くんだ。」She gets jealous so easily.
「本当は嬉しいくせに!」 I know you are happy about it.

「あいつなんて大嫌い!」I hate that guy!
「まだ好きなくせに」 I know you still like him.
