RE-303 vs. TT-303(mk2) Sound Comparison (hd audio)

Описание к видео RE-303 vs. TT-303(mk2) Sound Comparison (hd audio)

My camera is some knock off go pro the the video sucks, but the only reason the video is here is so you can see which machine I am on. The Black One on the right is the RE-303 and the Silver one sitting on top of the TR-8 is the TT-303(mk2). Which ever one I am tweaking is the one in the audio you are hearing. So in other words, the audio and video sync up.

I recorded the audio straight to my focusrite from my mackie 24.4. I did not do ANY post processing such as compression, distortion, or even normalization. I did my best to match the volumes. You will hear phasing when I go from one machine to the other so you can tell the transfers. I used the TT-303 as the source for midi as I find it much quicker to to write patterns in live mode on it than I do on the RE-303. I know the internet doesn't really need more tt303 vs re303, but when I was researching mine It seemed that almost all videos were some dingbat running their 303 clone thru a distortion pedal. You get 0 nuances when trying to compare the clones when you run them through distortion. A tb303 will sound the same as a 03, re303, tt303, you name it when you run a square thru a distortion pedals. Why even do a comparison if you are just going to post process it?

My Thoughts:
(listen to the video first then come back here)

re303:
- having the real thing in the mid 90's I must say that when it comes to the sound.. you cannot get better than the re-303. It's every aspect of the original down to the capacitors and resistors for the most part.
- The Quick Silver CPU does add some nice modern features. I still have some problems with it though.. I cannot TX sysex to or from the unit.
- The 303 sound (accent mostly) is really the hard thing to clone and this ...well this is the real deal. It nails it. If you are 100% after the 100% true 303 sound there is no better clone out there. If you have the money, go for it.
- If you don't build it yourself then obviously there's some quality issues. I'd say I trust my re303 about as much as I trusted my original one. Thus be careful with it.
- I tend to program this one old school style with doing time mode, then coming back and entering pitch mode. Yeah it's a PITA, but I yield better patterns this way. When I use the live input mode, I don't trust pushing on the buttons as much on the re303, and I just can't hit the timing of it like I can on the tt303

TT-303(mk2)
- So I have the mk2 model and people seem to be busting on the form factor of this "altoids can""pill box". I am pretty sure roland contacted them on their mk1 versions and was like "yo at least stop making it look exactly like our original product". I don't think it looks that bad at all and actually I feel that the construction of this mk2 is really good. I can get pretty aggressive with the button pushing and never feel like I am working on a fragile machine.
- The output on the mk2 is always "hot" in the sense that it always sounds like it's at the starting point of clipping. This is fine as it make this one sound a bit more aggressive.
- The accent note (which is the hard thing to clone from the 303) on the tt303 is not as good as the re303. I just think this is where most of the clones other than the re303 fall a little short. Don't read that the wrong way. The tt303 does a pretty damn good job of emulating it considering
- the price is right. If you are strapped for cash but want the closest sound you can get, then the tt303 is a no brainer. I could put down a major bet saying that 99.99% of people couldn't tell the difference when mixed in a track with other stuff.

Don't complain about the patterns. I tried to put a variety of styles in there and not make the video too long. I put random accents, etc.
