5 Most Outrageous Turbocharged Cars Of The 80s!

We're counting down five of the craziest turbo cars that shocked the automotive world during the age of neon and big hair. These aren't your average rides - these are the rebels that changed everything we thought we knew about speed and power.
First up, we've got the insane Buick GNX, the all-black muscle car that scared Ferraris and Porsches. With its turbocharged V6 engine putting out way more power than Buick admitted, this beast could sprint from 0 to 60 in just 4.6 seconds. That's supercar territory, folks! And remember, this came from Buick - a company known for making grandpa's favorite cruiser.
Next, check out the Shelby Omni GLH-S, a tiny hatchback that lived up to its name: "Goes Like Hell S'more." Carroll Shelby took a regular Dodge Omni and turned it into a pocket rocket that could embarrass much more expensive sports cars. With 175 horsepower in a lightweight package, this little monster proved that size doesn't matter.
The Pontiac Turbo Trans Am brings something special to our list. When tough emissions rules threatened to kill the muscle car, Pontiac fought back with turbo power. Their 301 cubic inch V8 got boosted by a Garrett turbocharger, keeping the Trans Am's performance spirit alive when everyone thought it was dead.
Then there's the mind-blowing Callaway Sledgehammer Corvette. This beast wasn't just fast - it was record-breaking fast. With 898 horsepower from its twin-turbo V8, it hit an incredible 254.76 mph, making it the fastest street-legal car of its time. The best part? You could actually drive it on regular roads!
Last but definitely not least, we've got the Shelby CSX-VNT, a car that introduced technology we still use today. Its variable nozzle turbocharger was revolutionary, eliminating the dreaded turbo lag that plagued other forced-induction cars of the era. Only 500 were ever made, making it one of the rarest cars on our list.
