Abstract
In modern times, most human endeavor occurs within hierarchical organizations that are formed and organized to carry out a purpose. Control, when stripped of its negative connotations can be thought of as the capacity to obtain purposed outcomes. Ashby’s Law of Requisite Variety states that for a system to be stable, the number of states of its control mechanism must be greater than or equal to the number of states in the system being controlled. A separate, but similarly named body of knowledge, Requisite Organization, explains why a managerial accountability hierarchy must be structured in discrete jumps in complexity of information processing (CIP) of its managers in order for proper context and control to be exercised through subordinates. The father of the field, Elliott Jaques, found that CIP spans multiple orders of complexity in a self-similar developmental progression from birth through death. Further, there is a 1-1 mapping from CIP to an exponential scale of longer and longer time spans of planning and carrying out goal-directed behavior at more abstract levels of human thought. The presentation will introduce the field of Requisite Organization, and raise multiple research questions including: What is the relationship between Requisite Variety and Requisite Organization? How does this relate to entropy and Kolmogorov complexity? What is the role of CIP in the emergence of complex societies? What is the distribution of CIP and its implications? What does the work of science look like at different levels of CIP? And how can this knowledge help us better manage complexity?
