Allison Sheridan interviews Laura Ruiz Asenjo from Flic about their small wireless buttons to use for smart home routines and automations. They are easy to get started with and configure, they replace voice commands, and they're simple to use for everyone since they don’t need a mobile device to operate.
You configure Flic devices using the Flic app on your mobile device. From the app, you assign actions to the Button’s triggers and set up the system or device that you want to control with these actions. Integrations with over 100 smart systems and services are available on the app. They include Phillips Hue, LIFX, Ikea Trader, Apple HomeKit, Matter, Sonos, Spotify, and many more. One notable absence is Google as they don’t support smart buttons.
Flic devices connect to your home network and other devices using two methods: 1) with a Bluetooth connection to your mobile device running the Flic app or 2) with a Bluetooth connection to the Flic Hub which connects to your home’s Wifi system. The latter method is preferred since it allows people without a mobile device or the Flic app to use the button. This setup is perfect for visitors in your home or someone who hasn’t installed the Flic app on their phone and wants to control a light or smart device.
Their initial product, the Flic Button, measures about 1 inch in diameter and a quarter inch thick. The Button has three triggers (Push, Double Push, and Hold) to which you can assign three different actions to control smart devices in your home. Example actions are to turn on/off a light, or combinations of lights, or anything that is controlled via a smart switch. The Button is light enough that it can be carried around or it can be set on a table or mounted to a surface. The Button’s battery life is up to 3 years.
The Flic Duo, which has two physical buttons and an internal motion sensor and accelerator, was recently launched at CES. The added button and sensors support five triggers which are Push, Double Push, Hold, Hold & Twist, and Hold & Swipe. Through button pushes and gestures, the additional triggers provide more control over some devices such as varying the intensity and color of a smart light.
Flic Twist is their third device which is circular and measures about 2 inches in diameter and about a half inch thick. This device supports four triggers: Push, Double Push, Twist, and Push & Twist. The Twist action is achieved by rotating the outer collar surrounding the button. It’s perfect for more precisely controlling continuously variable smart devices such as dimmers, shades & blinds, and speaker volume.
The Flic Button, Twist, and Hub are currently available for purchase. Flic Duo should be available for pre-order at the end of January 2025.
