This PCI-E to PS/2 expansion card was originally purchased to install Windows 7 on a modern PC. Why? Modern motherboards have USB 2.0 ports, but they’re routed through a USB 3.x controller, which older Windows operating systems don’t recognize. While Windows 7, Vista, or XP can use some official or unofficial USB 3.x drivers, the only guaranteed way to achieve native USB 1.1/2.0 support in Windows 9x is by using a dedicated OHCI/EHCI controller.

This card is marketed as a simple PS/2 adapter but it's hiding a secret: it’s actually a USB 2.0 controller (MCS9990 chip) with a built-in PS/2 converter. Good news: having USB 1.1/2.0 it's great for legacy systems running on modern hardware where the USB 3.x slots are basically non existent for OSes like Windows 9x through Windows 7. And, yes this adapter is actually from Windows 95 up to Windows 7. Works in newer OSes as well, but those can handle the onboard USB 3.x ports pretty well.

f you only need PS/2 conversion, a basic USB-to-PS/2 dongle it's cheaper and usually uses the same conversion chip as this adapter.
