Excuse the jitters - it smooths out! Handheld Super 8 video while hanging half out the car window, fast lane 210 fwy eastbound in Pasadena. Enormous hugs and thanks to my wife Lynda for awesome driving maintaining position with the loco for several miles. Decent running gear segment last half of video. Original sound track too.

Sept 1992 - 3751 deadheading from LA to Fontana with tool car in tow ending her roundtrip to Chicago for the SanteFe Employee Appreciation Tour and her first long road trip after massive restoration efforts.

We were headed to the LA County Fair that day and a friend called to say he heard a steam whistle from his office. We made our way down to the 210 tunnel entrance to see her leave Pasadena and then jumped on the freeway to catch her running eastbound.

Lynda made her way to the number one lane for awesome footage, some of it within 30 feet of the loco at speed. Thought we would have trouble holding up traffic ( time for a ticket ) and me sticking half way out the car window, but to our surprise traffic pulled up short of the tool car and created a traffic break. Even saw hand held voice recorders sticking out of windows and sun roofs catching the sound. What a day - right place right time - thanks Carl S for that phone call !

The last scene is of course at the Los Angeles County Fair Grounds of model 3751 running through the layout. It was the next scene on the tape so I left it in :-).

This run was shot on the Pasadena Sub, AT&SF, from Marengo St east to Arcadia. Early 90's saw an end to ATSF freight traffic and Amtrak Chief thru Pasadena as the subdivision was bought by the Southern California Regional Rail Authority. I think they pulled the rails in 1995 or so.

The running segment in this video is now home to the Metrolink Gold Line terminating at the Sierra Madre Station. The 210 flyover near the end of the video was demolished in the 90s. The replacement flyover is nearly complete this fall (2012) and will extend the gold line eastbound through Arcadia.
