In the hazy realm where electronic ambiance meets the raw essence of indie soul, one name resonates with ethereal allure: Tora ( ‪@ToraMusic‬ ) Hailing from Byron Bay, Australia, this enigmatic quartet has carved out a niche of their own in the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary music. Playing live for Moon on the Roof, “Happy To Have Today”, the third single from their forthcoming album “Temps De Flors”, you’ll quickly become passengers to the emotional and auditory journey of their music.

We welcomed the effortlessly well-dressed Tora boys Jo Loewenthal (lead vocals, guitar, and keys), Thorne Davis (drums), Shaun Johnston (bass guitar, keys), and Jai Piccone (vocals, guitar, and keys) into Mood on the Roof HQ on a rainy evening in Sydney. The thunderstorm subsided just in time fortunately for the band and crew, however the passing rain had left enough of a dewy residue to give our rooftop garden stage a special shimmer, which the Tora boys complimented with their confident, warm energy. As they carried their extensive kit up to the top level, the energetic chatter as we set up the stage lights had us certain we’d record a magic performance.

‘Happy To Have Today’, brings a new flavour for Tora incorporating elements of acoustic guitars (that we rarely see within Tora’s catalogue) complimenting the thought-provoking lyrics of the song. The theme of the track has the listener witness a conversation between a therapist and their patient. “We wanted to bring an empowering message with the chorus lyric stating ‘I’m Happy To Have Today Though’, encouraging the listener to see the bright side. With a strong belief in the power of positive affirmations, the song was written to help listeners rewire their own negative thought patterns by simply singing along” Tora explain of the new single.

With an organic sound that defies categorisation, yet embraces an unmistakable sense of intimacy, Tora has garnered a fervent following for good reason. From sold-out shows in Sydney to festival stages across Europe, Tora blur the lines between genres seamlessly. They’ve crafted a discography that embodies a sonic journey through ambient landscapes and soulful introspection. You can’t help but move when you’re listening to Tora, and these undeniably fun recordings are a perfect example of why.
Tora have just announced that their highly anticipated forthcoming record, “Temps De Flors”, will be released on 6 September 2024. The album is a testament to Tora's maturation as artists, weaving together lush melodies, pulsating rhythms, and introspective lyrics with seamless finesse. The title ‘Temps De Flors’ is Catalonian for ‘Time Of The Flowers’, inspired by the stunning location where they recorded the record in the north east of Catalonia during the spring. “Temps De Flors delivers 13 songs that all are quite different to one another, yet belong together as one larger story” Tora say of the forthcoming record. “The ongoing theme throughout the album is a feeling of moving from darkness into light, turning difficult times into prosperous times, a blossoming of spring in all senses, revelations, revolutions, innovations leading to abundance.” With each release, Tora continues to push the envelope of their sound, and the two songs we captured for Mood on the Roof are perfect examples of their experimental strengths and live prowess.
