The Effect of Electric Harmonics on Active and Reactive Power

The calculation for RMS and reactive power that is taught in most math classes is for pure sine waves. Pure sine waves are almost never present in electrical systems, particularly in inverter based traction motors. The excitation for these motors has both high and low frequency harmonics that will effect the RMS and reactive power calculations. Reactive power has two elements, the fundamental element the harmonic element. This video will describe the two types of reactive power.
