U-S aircraft carriers fired missiles during NATOs fourth day of air strikes against Yugoslavia, as protestors continued their demonstrations in dozens of European cities.

NATO Secretary-General Javier Solana has ordered the alliance's military forces to step up
their aerial assault on Yugoslavia and initiate strikes against a much wider range of targets.

The U-S ships stationed in the Adriatic have been involved in the attacks against Yugoslavia, firing and coordinating Tomahawk missiles at Serbian targets.

Together the three ships can carry almost 300 Tomahawk missiles, which have a range of 1,000 miles. (1,600 kilometres).

The commander of U-S Naval Forces, Commodore Joseph Krenzel says he has discussed the air attacks with his crew.

"The best preparation that we gave the sailors, and the crews of our ships and aircrafts, is understanding the mission and the results of the mission and why we are doing it and basically it boils down to is a humanitarian type mission."

The ships have been backing up the aerial bombardments, most launched from bases in Italy.

The country has eleven NATO bases, however, many Italians are uneasy with the alliance's presence in their country.

Protests were held in several Italian cities on Saturday.

Peace activists staged a demonstration outside the Gioia del Colle, calling for a peaceful resolution to the Kosovo crisis.

Meanwhile, several European countries are bracing for a refugee crisis, as hundreds of people flee the fighting in Kosovo.

At Bari's military airport, refugee camps are being prepared to cope with a possible influx.

So far most refugees have headed to neighbouring Macedonia and Albania.
