Life is all about balance. And the same can be said for photography, especially when it comes to exposing for the highlights and the shadows. In this episode of Getting the Shot, photographer and director Corey Rich discusses an image he captured of two mountain climbers approaching the iconic mountain Cerro Torre, located in the southern part of Argentine Patagonia. The sunrise set Cerro Torre ablaze in alpenglow, while the two climbers approached in a still dark valley. It was an incredible opportunity, but the only question would be: how to get both subjects—the climbers and the mountain—properly exposed in a single frame? The answer is graduated ND filters. Corey covers how ND filters work, why you don’t need to bring a filter case if you’re moving light and fast, and which ND filter he recommends. Achieving balance in life is hard, but properly exposed photographs is easy, just as long as you know how to use ND filters.
