Annie Irvine, a charismatic evangelist and founder of the left-wing Workers-Christian Alliance, returns to England having survived an assassination attempt in Chicago. Cowley, who reveals he had a romantic past with Annie, assigns Bodie and Doyle to protect her. The agents are amused to discover their boss's former love life. They detain a right-wing opponent of the Alliance, but soon realize there may be more to the assassination attempt than political differences.
