About Shore Temple

The shore temple is situated in the town of Mahabalipuram of Tamil Nadu and is maintained by archeological survey of India and the entrance fee for the shore temple is Rs 40 for Indians and Rs 600 for the foreigners and is open to general public from 8 am to 5 pm daily.

Shore temple was built around the 700 ad during the Pallava dynasty and has been classified as a UNESCO world heritage site since 1984.

It is one of the oldest rock-cut stone temples of south India.

The entire temple is built of cut stones rather than carving the actual temple structure out.

Shore temple complex consists of 3 temples. one big temple and two small temples.

Two shrines in the shore temple are dedicated to Lord Shiva. the 3rd and the small temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Shore temple looks like a chariot from a distance. it is believed that shore temple resembles the structure of Dharmaraja Ratha.

Shore temple was famously known as 'seven pagodas' among the seafarers as this colossal structure standing on the seashore acted as a sight for navigating their ships.

The name 'seven pagodas' indicate to the existence of 7 temples during the ancient times. now only shore temple remains to tell the tales of the past. it is said that the remaining six temple remain submerged in the sea nearby to the shore temple.

In the year 2004, a huge tsunami hit the temple and its surrounding, but there was no major damage to the overall structure of this temple.

The shore temple was built facing the east so that the first rays of the sun fall directly on the Shiva Linga inside the shrine.

Mahabalipuram sea is located very next to the shore temple and one can find lot of road side hawkers selling a variety of items ranging from toys, bangles, souvenirs, and decorative pieces made out of sea shells.
