In this video, artist Patricia Ayres takes a journey through New York as she sources materials for her sculptures, drawing upon historic stores in Manhattan such as Canal Rubber Supplies (previously also frequented by one of her favourite artists, Eva Hesse), and Daytona Trimmings in the Garment District. 

Ayres has a deep connection to the Garment District, having moved into sculpture from a career in fashion design, bringing with her a ‘lifetime of experience’ and a profound concern with the role, treatment and presentation of the body.  

At Frieze New York, Ayres will present a new work with Matthew Brown in which she continues to wrestle with the ‘soft and hard’ of bodies and sculpture, conceiving the hard parts as ‘bones’. The artist experiences this labour-intensive approach as ‘a form of torture, physically and emotionally. I just keep pushing it until it gets to that point where I’m satisfied.’
