The Davis Lisboa Mini-Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona

The Davis Museum Barcelona, also known as the Davis Lisboa Mini-Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, was founded by myself in 2009. Similar to Marcel Broodthaers’ “Sections” of his “Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles”, I’ve been developing a number of sections for my museum, which are visible on my project website on www.davismuseum.com.

The last “Section” I produced is this collection of digital animations developed with Procreate on an iPad Pro with the intention of continuing Marcel Broodthaers’ “Section des Aigles” while adapting its premise for the contemporary world of social networks in the twenty-first century.

The animations on studies of oil paintings that deal with two Greek myths: Prometheus and Ganymede.

The myth of Prometheus is a story from Greek mythology, in which the titan Prometheus defies the gods and steals fire from them to give to humanity. In the myth, the gods have kept fire to themselves, hoarding its warmth and light, and humanity is forced to live in cold and darkness. Prometheus, who feels sorry for humanity, steals fire from the gods and brings it down to earth, where it is used to warm homes and cook food. For this act, Prometheus is punished by the god Zeus, who has him bound to a rock and orders an eagle to eat his liver every day, only for it to grow back each night. The myth of Prometheus is often seen as a tale of defiance and the human desire for knowledge and progress. It is also a cautionary tale about the dangers of angering the gods.

The myth of the abduction of Ganymede is a story from Greek mythology, in which the god Zeus falls in love with a handsome mortal named Ganymede and carries him off to Olympus to be his cupbearer. In the myth, Ganymede is a prince of the city of Troy, and Zeus, disguised as an eagle, carries him off to the heavens. Once on Olympus, Ganymede becomes the cupbearer of the gods, responsible for pouring their nectar and ambrosia. The story of the abduction of Ganymede has been interpreted in many different ways, and has been the subject of numerous works of art and literature. It is often seen as a symbol of same-sex love and homosexuality, as Zeus's love for Ganymede is typically depicted as romantic and passionate.
