In the Sunday Sitdown interview airing February 1st, Willie Geist asked Luke Combs if he ever thought performing could be an actual job. Luke's answer? "You know, no, as crazy as that sounds."
The "Forever After All" singer explained: "I kick myself all the time, like, 'How did I not put this together sooner?' All I did was sing all the time, and never one time was I like, 'Maybe I could sing for a living.' I don't know, I guess in my mind it was like, 'Well, I mean, that's not something you do. It's not a job you can have.'"
Luke explained that growing up, he thought famous musicians like Alan Jackson "live on 'famous planet,' and I'm on 'not-famous planet,' and they beam all the famous stuff down to Earth." He couldn't conceptualize that being a musician was actually someone's real job.
Coming from a working-class North Carolina family, Luke's parents told him to "chase your dreams," but he interpreted that as "chase your dreams within reason." He thought maybe he'd open a restaurant or "just stick to banking."
His parents encouraged his singing and were proud, "But it wasn't like my dad was like, 'Hey slugger, you'll be Garth Brooks one day, man.'" In fact, his dad said the opposite: "You'll never be Garth Brooks." Luke adds with amazement: "And no slack to him. How often does that happen? It doesn't happen. And damn, it happened though."
Today, Luke Combs has multiple #1 country hits including "When It Rains It Pours," "Beautiful Crazy," and his cover of "Fast Car." He has three Grammy nominations, multiple CMA Awards (including Entertainer of the Year), CMT Music Awards, and ACM Awards. His new album "The Way I Am" drops March 20th via Sony Music Nashville.
From thinking he'd stick to banking to becoming country music royalty—Luke Combs' journey is proof that sometimes the impossible actually happens.
