VENICE, CA — Friday, January 2, 2026 — A coordinated multi-agency cleanup operation was conducted along the Venice Beach Boardwalk on Friday morning as the City of Los Angeles continued efforts to address sanitation, public safety, and accessibility in public spaces.

Advance cleanup notices had been posted under Los Angeles Municipal Code §56.11, advising individuals in the area to temporarily relocate so crews could perform sanitation work. Environmental Compliance Inspectors (ECI) distributed 60-gallon bags and explained the posted requirements. Several individuals gathered their belongings and cleared the area as crews began operations.

The effort was led by the Department of Public Works in coordination with Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Environmental Compliance Inspectors, and a homeless coordinator from Councilwoman Traci Park’s office. Sanitation crews, hazardous-materials specialists, and outreach workers moved through the corridor removing debris, addressing encampment-related items, and separating hazardous materials from general refuse.

ECI and Clean Harbors personnel identified and removed hazardous items including batteries and aerosol containers, while Public Works crews collected trash, bulky items, and other debris from the Boardwalk and adjacent areas.

During the operation, crews removed two unattended upright pianos positioned just off the Boardwalk. The instruments appeared heavily damaged and inoperable. It was not immediately clear whether the pianos were associated with local street musician Nathan “The Piano Man” Pino. Crews also removed a sofa that had been placed beneath the historic Venice pagoda structures

Staff from Councilwoman Traci Park’s office assisted with inter-agency coordination, while outreach workers from the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) engaged with individuals on scene and offered information about supportive housing, mental-health services, and other assistance.
