The impressive Gravensteen fortress sits in the centre of the city of Ghent in Belgium. Rebuilt from an earlier wooden structure on the orders of Philip I of Alsace, the castle was constructed in limestone from around 1180 with a considerable amount of 19th century embellishments. The castle has seen use as a court, prison, mint and a cotton mill over the passing centuries.
