Searching For Wild Otters in Sandaig Bay, Scotland + Exploring 2000 Year Old Ruins & Painting a Frog

Hello & welcome along on this walk! If you're new here - my name is Sarah and each week I head out on a walk with my faithful companion Jack Spaniels, to explore somewhere in this beautiful country of Scotland and hopefully find something to paint back in my studio at home.

This week we head to a remote area on the north-west coast of Scotland called Sandaig Bay - although this location may be better known to some as 'Camusfearna', from the 1960 book 'Ring of Bright Water'.

This book tells of the author, Gavin Maxwell's, escape from aristocratic lie in London to a remote sandy beach in the Highlands of Scotland to live a simple life with his pet otters.

Although Maxwell brought his otters to Sandaig from other counties, this area is one of the best places to see wild otters in Scotland. Would we be lucky enough to spot these elusive creatures..?!

We definitely found a stunning hidden landscape with islands nestled among clear blue seas and some interesting wildlife. I paint from a photograph of a common frog, displaying bright patterns on its skin to act as camouflage from its many predators.

We also pay a bonus visit to some prehistoric building ruins, unique to the highlands of Scotland - Brochs. Over 2000 years old, these remains are a mysterious glimpse into the past of this country.

If you enjoyed this video and you haven't already, please check out my other videos - including the three special Skye episodes, where we explore some incredible scenery. Join me again next week as we explore somewhere else in Scotland and look for painting inspiration...
