Armature reaction is a phenomenon that occurs in DC motors and generators where the magnetic field of the rotor (the rotating part of the motor or generator) interacts with the magnetic field of the stator (the stationary part of the motor or generator). This interaction causes a distortion in the flux distribution, which can result in a decrease in the efficiency of the motor or generator and can also cause a change in the direction of the torque.

When the rotor of a DC motor rotates, it generates its own magnetic field. This magnetic field interacts with the magnetic field of the stator, which is created by the current flowing through the stator's windings. The interaction between these two magnetic fields causes the flux distribution to become distorted.

The armature reaction affects the performance of the DC motor in two ways:

It causes a reduction in the motor's efficiency by reducing the amount of torque produced for a given current.
It causes the direction of the torque to change, which can cause the motor to produce less torque or even stall.
The armature reaction is often counteracted by using methods such as compensating winding, interpoles, skewing, compensating field winding and distributed winding in order to improve the efficiency of the motor or generator.
