An ECMO machine (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) is a life-support device used to provide prolonged cardiac and respiratory support for patients whose heart and lungs are unable to function adequately on their own. How ECMO Works

Blood is drained from the body through cannulas placed in veins or arteries.

Treatment support for conditions like acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and severe COVID-19 cases when ventilation alone is insufficient.

Types of ECMO

Veno-venous ECMO (VV ECMO) provides lung support by oxygenating the blood.

Veno-arterial ECMO (VA ECMO) supports both heart and lung functions by bypassing these organs.

ECMO is not a cure but a supportive technology that sustains life while the heart and lungs recover or while awaiting further treatment options
