SURNAME MEANING
An English patronymic surname of Norman Origin, meaning “son of Richard”, derived from the Middle English personal name Hikke, a pet form of the name Ricard, which is the Norman-Picard form of the name Richard. The substitution of H- as the initial resulted from the inability of the English to cope with the velar Norman R-.

NOBLE TITLES HELD
The Hicks Baronetcy of Beverston in the County of Gloucester was created in the Baronetage of England in 1619 for Sir William Hicks, a Member of Parliament for Great Marlow, Royalist during the English civil war who participated in the Siege of Colchester, son of Sir Michael Hicks (1543-1612), an English politician who was secretary to Lord Burgley, son of Robert Hicks of Bristol, a London merchant.

The Hicks Baronetcy of Campden in the County of Gloucester was created in the Baronetage of England in 1627 for Sir Baptist Hicks, a wealthy textile merchant and who represented Tavistock and Tewkesbury in the House of Commons, son of Robert Hicks and grandson of John Hicks of Tortworth. In 1628, he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Hicks of Ilmington and Viscount Campden of Campden.
