Jennifer Montone is Principal Horn of The Philadelphia Orchestra, and teaches at the Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School. Jennifer is an active chamber musician, has performed as a guest artist or soloist with numerous orchestras, and the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant, has also won a Grammy Award for her performance of the Penderecki Horn Concerto with the Warsaw National Philharmonic.

Violinist Catherine Cho has been a top prizewinner at the Hannover, Queen Elizabeth, and Montreal competitions. She maintains an active performing career, serves on the faculty at The Juilliard School, and has also recently been appointed Artistic Advisor of the biennial Starling-DeLay Symposium.

In this episode, we explore the psychological and physical challenges musicians face, from overcoming performance anxiety to balancing mind-body-spirit connections. Jennifer and Catherine share insights on the coping strategies, breathing exercises, and mindfulness techniques that they use themselves and teach to their students. We also discuss the impact of parenthood, managing injuries, and the art of teaching.

NOA KAGEYAMA
Performance psychologist Noa Kageyama is on the faculty of The Juilliard School and the Cleveland Institute of Music. A conservatory-trained violinist with degrees from Oberlin and Juilliard before pursuing a Ph.D. in psychology at Indiana University, he now specializes in working with performing artists, teaching them how to utilize sport psychology principles and more consistently perform up to their full abilities under pressure. Noa's work has appeared in media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, NBC News, CNN, Slate, WNYC radio, Strings Magazine, Musical America, and Lifehacker.
