Week in Review: CPS Board Takes Aim at CEO; City Budget Passes

Chicago Public Schools students are off for two weeks. When they return to classes the district may well have a new chief as the Board of Education was set to make moves Friday night to fire CEO Pedro Martinez.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Teachers Union — no fan of Martinez — wants a new contract wrapped and under the tree by Christmas.

But while there’s tumult at CPS, the city did finally pass a budget for 2025 on the fourth attempt.

The spending plan raises a host of fees in order to avoid hiking property taxes.

Critics like Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd Ward) says it’s “just smoke and mirrors.”

And on a holiday break are the jury in the corruption trial against former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan. Prosecutors have rested their case and Madigan’s lawyers have begun mounting their defense.
