About the Arab Music Performance Program at the University of Pennsylvania.
A program designed and implanted by Dr. Hanna Khuri at the University of Pennsylvania. This performance program introduces Arabic songs and Instrumental genres in number of performance workshops. A gateway to the Arab world, these are experiential courses where students get introduced to key concepts in Arab music: melodic and rhythmic modes, performance practices, mechanisms of dissemination and preservation, musical forms, and the art of ornamentation in Arab music. Students in the voice workshops get to perform songs with a wide range of themes - national songs, celebration of rulers and regimes, nostalgia, love, al-Andalus as a shared Arab imagined past, revolution among other themes. Students in the Instrumental workshops get the chance to explore performance practices and instrumental forms in an introductory course titled the Art of Ornamentation, a pre-requisite to joining an instrumental firqah.

Courses:
Arabic Song Workshop
Advanced Arabic Song Workshop
Art of Ornamentation in Arab Music - Instrumental Workshop
Firqah - Instrumental Workshop

This performance program was made possible with generous support of my parents Layla & Anis Khuri, parents-in-law Seomgyo & Taeksung Kim, my wife Yoonji Kim, the music department at the University of Pennsylvania, and the wonderful and talented students who participated in these courses. I am grateful to all of you.
