(12 Mar 2017) Thousands of internally displaced people continued to flee the fighting in Western Mosul on Sunday, as the United Nations built new camps to accommodate the influx of people.
The latest camp to open was Chamakor, 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) east of Mosul.
The number of internally displaced people continues to rise as government forces try to recapture Iraq's second largest city Mosul from Islamic State group control.
As the number of internally displaced people rises, the UNHCR has announced it is building two additional camps near Mosul that will house another 39,000 people.
However, the UN refugee agency said they could face serious challenges if the current scale of displacement continues.
Earlier this week, hundreds of people left the village of Rihaniya in Western Mosul to escape the fighting.
Abu Fawaz was one of them and said they walked 40 kilometres (25 miles) through the mountains to get to safety.
"The road that we took, from Rihaniya, is a mountainous road, it was a very hard journey. There were people on wheelchairs that we were pushing in the mountains. It was hard for us," said Fawaz.
So far, several nongovernmental organisations such as the Iraqi Red Crescent Society, the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East, the Barzani Charity Foundation, and the Norwegian Refugee Council have provided all aid to the camps in the Mosul area, including food, water, and hygiene kits.
The UN says more needs to be done; 37 million US dollars is needed within the next six weeks to continue the humanitarian response in Mosul.
