Israel Hezbollah Ceasefire: Cars Stream Toward Southern Lebanon After Fighting Ends | News18 | N18G

The Israeli-backed Hezbollah and Iranian-backed Israel have agreed to a ceasefire backed by the US and France, marking the end of a 14-month-long conflict that killed thousands in Lebanon.

The US President Joe Biden announced the agreement, stating that both governments accepted the US proposal to end the devasting conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu declared that he was ready to accept the US proposal, stating that any violation of Hezbollah would force Israel to respond forcefully and allow Israel to retain 'complete military freedom of action'.

The US could also play a role in rebuilding infrastructure destroyed by Israeli strikes. Over the next 60 days, the Israeli army and state security forces will take control again, with Israeli troops having a deadline of 60 days to withdraw from Lebanon's territory. The first peel-off of Israeli troops from Lebanon is set to begin within the next 10 days.

Hezbollah is expected to pull its forces and weapons back about 20 miles from the Israeli border, but will not be allowed to rebuild infrastructure or weaponry in the area they evacuated. The ceasefire would end the deadliest war in Lebanon since its civil war in 1990.
