Wire Ferrules -- Cord End Terminals

Wire Ferrules, also known as cord end terminals, are becoming increasingly popular. The reason for this is that their usage helps eliminate errors due to frayed wire ends or whiskers which are common with stranded wire. When stranded wire is inserted into a termination it is possible for one or more of the strands to be bent an remain outside of the termination. This allows the possibility of intermittent failure after the installation has been tested and put into operation.

Installing a wire ferrule on the end of the stranded wire essentially turns the stranded wire into a solid wire. This helps insure secure and error-free connections.

Wire ferrules (or cord end terminals) are available in three common styles:
uninsulated (or bare)
insulated
dual-wire (or twin-wire) -- These ferrules accept two wires and allow them to be crimped together into a single ferrule

All of these ferrules are compressed onto the end of the stripped wire using a ferrule crimping tool.

The usual process is as follows:
cut the wire to the required length
strip off some of the wire insulation—the tool I am using here is the Weidmuller Stripax, P/N 900500
select the wire ferrule with a matching cross-section for the wire
slide the wire into the wire ferrule
crimp the ferrule using the crimping tool (the tool I am using here is a Weidmuller PZ 4 Crimper P/N 901250)

Now you are ready to insert the finished wire into the termination.

Wire ferrules are usually shipped loose in bags. Some sizes of insulated wire ferrules are available in strips for use with the Weidmuller Stripax Plus combination tool P/N 902000. This convenient tool cuts wire, strips wire, and crimps ferrules using an automatic ferrule-strip feed mechanism.
