Welcome back to #TechTalk! In our second installment, we’re discussing SLEEPER stations, a great example of Norfolk Southern using technology to improve its environmental footprint while also increasing the efficiency of its operations.

In the past, locomotives waiting in rail yards to make their next trip had to keep their engines switched on to ensure that certain systems - such as engine water and batteries - remained in ready status to quickly resume operation.

Enter SLEEPER, stations, which provide 480-volt, three-phase power to locomotives waiting in yards for their next task. By installing these stations in its rail yards, NS is able to “plug in” many of its locomotives on standby in local yards, allowing them to switch off their engines and still remain ready for active service.

This reimagined process reduces yard emissions and saves millions of gallons of diesel fuel each year – just one way NS is leveraging technology to achieve more intelligent operations for a greener future.
