Nashville's mayor responded to Representative Andy Ogles' calls for the National Guard to come to the city to combat crime, despite police statistics showing a decline.
Mayor Freddie O'Connell responded to the call during his weekly roundtable Friday morning, saying in part that Rep. Ogles' priorities should be elsewhere.
"I understand that this is a congressman who is himself under investigation and seems to be showing off for the president so he can get a pardon," Mayor O'Connell says. "This is somebody who is involved in a political race of his own, but seems more invested in a city he neither has an office in or lives in. It is absurd hearing his claims about crime stats..."
For the first eight months of the year, crime and gun violence are seeing major declines, according to statistics released by Metro Nashville Police Department. Statistics include:
Non-fatal shootings down 35%
Fatal shootings down nearly 31%
Robberies down 25%
Burglaries down 15%
Violent crime overall down 12%
Property crime down 10%
