A talk about how the Trump administration’s current attacks on “the Radical Left and Marxist maniacs” threaten freedom of speech in ways that echo similar attacks during the first “Red Scare,” when American opponents of World War I were subjected to a massive campaign of repression. The talk outlines that wave of repression; the famous court cases of 1919 that supported that repression; and the ways that civil liberties activists, most of whom were also socialists or supporters of socialism, challenged the repression, and laid the foundations for a fragile but important legal and political culture of civil liberties—the very culture that is currently under siege.
